How to apply for an internship: Resume and preparation

Ad selection for internship application, inexperienced CV, sample application message, portfolio and submission checklist.

QUICK ANSWER

In your internship application, clearly indicate the field you want to learn, the dates you are available for, and your relevant courses or projects. Watch the channel in the ad; Tailor your CV and application message with relevant information for each role.

Clarify goal and schedule

Determining the field you want to research instead of “I'm looking for any internship” makes your application concrete. Once you choose a direction, such as software, accounting or marketing, read up on introductory roles in that field. Clarify for yourself the city, the possibility of working remotely, the start date and the time you can spare.

Mandatory or voluntary internship requirements may vary depending on your school and program. You can check the insurance, documentation and approval process from the relevant unit of your school; Verify admission requirements with employer. Don't use a general internet article as a definitive rule for your own program.

If no experience, show your relevant work

You do not have to leave the experience section of your CV blank. Actual course projects, student club responsibilities, volunteer work and personal productions can be described with appropriate titles. Don't present them as paid work; Use clear labels like “Course Project” or “Volunteer Work.”

Your purpose in a project, the method you use and your role should be understood. Instead of just listing course names, describe one or two work-related studies. Do not confuse the tools you are just learning with the tools you can use independently.

Make small but meaningful edits according to the ad

Compare your own work with the skills in the ad. If Excel knowledge is required, highlight the table or reporting work you actually use. If communication in English is expected, write honestly about your level. Adding all the words mentioned in the advertisement to your CV will not give you competencies you do not have.

You can choose a simple template in ToolsCD and take your training and projects to the top. Use large headings and regular spacing; Do not make text smaller to squeeze more information onto the page. After downloading the file, re-read the actual output.

Base the application message on purpose and relevance

In the message, briefly state your field, the role you are applying for, your relevant work and date availability. Say that you have attached your CV. If the application system also asks you to fill out a form, do not just send an e-mail.

EXAMPLE TO ADAPT

Fictional example: "Hello, I am applying for your summer Data Analysis Intern posting. I am a second-year statistics student; I cleaned an open data set and examined it with graphics in my course project. I am available for the July-August period. I am attaching my CV. Thank you for your evaluation." Adapt the field, dates and experience to your own circumstances.

Keep the portfolio small and accessible

A software repository, design selection, or short project file can make your work visible. Choose a few well-presented projects relevant to the role rather than many unfinished files. For each project, include a brief description of the purpose, your own contribution, and the tools used.

Specify team share in the group project. Do not present someone else's code or design as your own. Control access by opening the link in an incognito window; Do not share customer data, private keys or personal information of teammates.

Follow the applications and prepare for the interview

Keep a list of the company, role, application deadline and submitted document. This way you can reduce sending the wrong version to the same institution. When the invitation comes, work in a way that you can explain your projects without a screen: what you did, why you did it, where you had difficulties.

Ask what tasks the internship will offer you, who you will work with, and how the learning process progresses. Clarify any uncertainties regarding acceptance or pay conditions with the relevant institution. The outcome of each application may be different; Follow suitable opportunities regardless of the applications you did not receive a response from.
