Writing an English resume: Headings, dates and translation

Write titles, job names and dates consistently in your English CV. Sample experience sentences and things to check by country.

QUICK ANSWER

When preparing an English CV, translating just the titles is not enough. Organize your tasks, training, and experience items in the same language without changing the meaning.

Check the language and country of the ad

English CV is not a single document prepared with the same rules all over the world. Employer's application instructions, sector and country expectations are important. Don't assume a single universal rule, especially for photo and personal information preferences. Check the document language and file type requested by the ad from the beginning.

The words CV and resume may not mean the same length and scope in every context. While publication and research history is expected in an academic application, a shorter summary of experience may be requested in a corporate job. Consider the application instructions rather than the name of the document.

Use section titles consistently

Consider the language of the entire file together, from communication fields to experience items. When the title of a section is in English but the explanation below it is in Turkish, the reading flow is disrupted. Selecting the output language in ToolsCD as English edits the section titles; You should also check the translation of the free texts you write.

  • Profile: Professional Summary / Profile
  • Work experience: Work Experience / Experience
  • Education: Education
  • Skills: Skills
  • Projects and certifications: Projects / Certifications

Translate the title according to its function, not word for word

The dictionary equivalent of a Turkish title may not fully describe the job you do in the company. Look at the titles used in postings in the same field; but do not choose a response that increases your responsibility. Translating a role where you are not a manager as “manager” makes the text more inaccurate, not more impressive.

For school and degree information, use the official English name of the institution, if available. Do not produce an equivalence or academic title yourself. If clarification is needed, you can keep the original name and add a brief English context. Uncover the meaning of an unfamiliar abbreviation on first use.

Make the experience sentence simple

You don't have to turn the translation into a long and complicated sentence. When what you do, the process involved and the resulting output are clear, a short sentence is sufficient. Consistently use the past tense for completed tasks and the appropriate tense structure for ongoing tasks.

EXAMPLE TO ADAPT

Illustrative translation: “Haftalık stok raporlarını hazırladım.” → “Prepared weekly inventory reports.” With relevant context: “Prepared weekly inventory reports for the purchasing team.” Use these phrases only if they describe work you actually did.

Check dates, contact details and links

The day and month order of numerical dates may be read differently between countries. A format that uses a month name, such as “Mar 2024 – Jan 2026,” reduces ambiguity. Maintain the same pattern in all experiences. In ongoing tasks, use “Present” only for the period actually in progress.

Consider writing your phone with the country code so it can be called internationally. If your portfolio contains only Turkish descriptions, it may be useful to add a short English summary of the relevant project. Check that the language and content of the page opened are understandable as well as the functioning of the link.

Read the translation one last time for accuracy.

If you're using a translation tool, consider the resulting text as a suggestion. If the tool added years of experience, scope of duties, or technical skills, correct it. Make sure that verbs, especially “led,” “owned,” and “managed,” accurately reflect your responsibility.

Search for titles, dates and sample texts left in Turkish in the last file. If possible, ask someone who speaks English for feedback on whether you understand what you're doing, not just spelling corrections. If you cannot explain a very fancy sentence in the interview, write it more simply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare an English CV from a Turkish page?

Yes. You can select the output language as English. Section headings change accordingly; Texts you enter, such as experience and profile, will not be translated automatically.

Should I put a photo in my English CV?

Check the country of application, employer and job posting expectations. For example, while US-focused career resources recommend resumes without photos, practices in other markets may be different.
