Wi-Fi QR code: share a guest network

A Wi-Fi QR code carries a network name, a security setting and, for a protected network, its password. A compatible phone can use these details to offer a connection without manual typing.

Choose the right network

Use a guest network you are allowed to share. Copy the exact network name, including spaces and letter case. In ToolsCD, the Wi-Fi settings are WPA, WEP and no password; choose the setting matching your network rather than guessing from its name.

The WPA setting is used for compatible WPA/WPA2 networks. WPA3 support depends on the network and scanning device; a code is not a way around authentication requirements. If uncertain, ask the network administrator and test the intended devices.

Treat the password as shared information

The password is included in the code and can be read by anyone who scans or decodes it. A QR image does not encrypt this information. Avoid putting a private staff network or a password reused elsewhere on a public sign.

After a password or network-name change, generate a new code. Test the downloaded image at its intended print size; a readable code still cannot connect a device when the credentials or network permissions are wrong.

Create your code

  1. Select Wi-Fi in the QR tool.
  2. Enter the exact guest network name and matching security setting.
  3. Enter the password; leave it empty only for an open network.
  4. Generate, download and scan with a separate phone.

Fictional guest network

SSID: ToolsCD Guest | Password: SampleGuest2026!

This visible sample is not a real network. Replace both values and choose the correct security setting.

Frequently asked questions

Does the code hide my password?

No. It includes the password in readable form, even if the scanning app does not display it immediately.

Will every phone connect?

No. Camera support, Wi-Fi security and network settings vary. Test the devices your guests are likely to use.

What if I change the password?

Create and print a new code with the updated password; the downloaded image cannot update itself.
